Phone or video interviews can be less stressful if you're concerned, as you're not sitting directly across from the interviewers. You can choose a comfortable environment and set your surroundings. You will have already researched the company and interviewers and prepared for potential questions.

Phone Interview:

  1. Ensure you're seated comfortably with desk space and a connected laptop for any necessary research.

  2. Have your CV and any notes you might need in front of you.

  3. Choose a noise-free environment to enhance communication.

  4. Start with a simple formal introduction when answering the call, such as "Good morning, this is XYZ speaking," instead of "Hello" or "Hi."

  5. Practice good listening skills, as you won't be able to observe the interviewer's body language. Wait for the interviewer to finish the question before responding.

  6. Note down the interviewer's name to address them as Mr. or Ms. ABC, adding a personal touch.

  7. Pause for a few seconds after each question to ensure the interviewer has finished and to collect your thoughts before responding.

Video Interview:

  1. Dress in smart casual or formal attire.

  2. Ensure you're seated comfortably with desk space.

  3. Log in and test the video connection at least 10 minutes before your interview.

  4. Keep your CV and any necessary notes on your desk.

  5. Choose a noise-free environment to prevent disturbances.

  6. Begin with a simple formal introduction, like "Good morning Mr. or Ms. XYZ, and thank you for this call," rather than "Hello" or "Hi."

  7. Ensure your background is tidy, as the interviewer can see your surroundings, which should appear professional.

With the significant rise in phone and video interviews recently, it's wise to maximize digital technology for future interviews, including screen sharing for presentations. You'll save time on travel, parking, and locating venues.

Best of luck.
