The job search has always been challenging, and the pandemic has made it even more difficult. Many companies are forced to downsize and restructure, and the fear of being laid off during the pandemic is a constant worry. If you've lost your job, this is worth reading.

Here are the top 6 tips you can implement immediately to improve your chances of finding a job quickly.

"For job seekers who need to find a new job as soon as possible, we recommend being flexible with their expectations and approaching the search with a hustle mentality," says a leading recruiter. Here are our top 6 tips for your job search:

Ensure Your CV is Well-Structured and Formatted

Your CV is one of the most crucial documents that can determine whether you get an interview or screening call. Avoid these common mistakes that might prevent your CV from being shortlisted.

  • A good CV layout with sub-headings is essential.

  • Choose appropriate fonts for headings, subheadings, and job descriptions.

  • Keep your CV simple and professional. I will share sample CVs with our subscribers.

  • Conduct a thorough spell-check. Grammatical errors reflect poorly.

Choose the Right Words

Recruiters and hiring managers don't have time to read every CV in detail. Your CV should include the right words that match the job description. Ensure that if you have relevant experience, knowledge, or training, you include those keywords in your CV. This might mean tailoring your CV for each job, which is acceptable (ensure you don't misrepresent your CV). CVs are often searched using Boolean criteria or ATS, such as ("Sales Engineer" AND "tender" AND "quotations" AND "JD Edwards"), meaning these words need to appear at least once in your CV. If they're absent, your CV might be overlooked.

Build and Maximize Your Network

"It's always about who you know and what you know."

Networking is often the best way to find a job. Connect with everyone you know, from your first hiring manager and team members to your current contacts. If you've maintained good relationships, at least one out of 25 people you connect with might provide a lead. Getting references or recommendations from decision-makers adds value to your application.

Join online groups for job seekers to find out who is hiring and what roles are available.

Seek advice and don't hesitate to ask for help from previous managers and peers. They can guide and support you, especially now.

Market Your Own CV

Often, the best job opportunities are with your previous employers' competitors or companies in the same industry. It's crucial to reach out to them. They may already know you or recognize similar terminology, words, or clients in your CV, which will attract attention now or in the future.

Given your current job search situation, contact recruitment agencies, register with online job portals, apply for jobs posted by companies on various platforms, and network. Make sure you actively search for a new job. Your working hours should be 08:00 AM to 5:30 PM, 5-6 days a week, with an hour off for lunch. Your travel and benefits depend on how well you achieve your goals.

Take up a Temporary Job

Bills still need to be paid. Many candidates struggling to find a job refuse offers because they don't meet salary expectations or aren't from multinationals. Rent, groceries, utilities, and children's needs still require payment. Avoid a long gap in your CV by considering temporary jobs or roles outside your field, as it's uncertain how long it will take to find the next job. These are temporary solutions that require humility to make ends meet.

Stay Positive

Maintaining motivation during your job search can be challenging. The stress of paying bills, fear of the future, and health concerns can take a mental toll. Depression and demotivation are real threats. However, there is a way forward. It's crucial to engage in activities like fresh air, jogging, swimming, or light exercise to maintain a positive mindset. A negative attitude is not helpful. Remember, friends and family are there for support, even if it doesn't seem like it. Stay strong; many others are in the same situation. This too shall pass, and soon you'll have a job.

Wishing you all the best in your job search.
