Falsifying or misrepresenting your CV is inappropriate and unacceptable. It will almost certainly lead to exposure, embarrassment, and termination.

However, there might be an exception to this rule. According to recruiters, crafting a fictional CV could be an effective method to map out your career path and establish professional goals for the year.

As Top Recruiters explain:

1. Align Your Lies With Your GOALS

A top recruiter explains, "At the beginning of each year, I update my CV with deliberate fabrications. I lie, intentionally and confidently: proficient in X; launched Y; led a team. I shape it to perfection."

What do you aspire to achieve professionally? Include it in your CV. Your CV is no longer just a job application; it is now a GOAL you aim to accomplish within the year. Once the goal is set, no changes are allowed. Achieve it. This approach motivates you to improve, succeed, and excel. Jobs will align with your goals and ambitions.

2. Plan the Process

A top recruiter explains, "And in its perfect, fictional state, I consider what steps I can take in the coming year to transform it from fiction to reality."

This strategy is beneficial only if you take it a step further by planning how to turn these lies into reality. What skills must you acquire? What projects should you undertake? Who should you network with? When do you plan to start, and how quickly do you want to achieve it within the year?

3. "Just Do It" - As NIKE says

"I believe this is the best career advice I have, a modern twist on ‘dress for the job you want.’ Design your CV to reflect your aspirations, and then determine how to transform that fiction into reality within a year."

Finally, execute your action plan. Although lying on your CV is unacceptable, using it as a tool to refine your career development objectives is an intriguing way to set yourself up for success.
